From the car park, numerous cliffs and bluffs can be seen dotting the sunny hillside above. In winter this area comes into its own when the walls echo with climbing calls, encouragement and jokes, particularly in Italian. Sometimes even the skifield traffic is drowned out.
This area offers some excellent bouldering. There are problems near the car park, below Main Cliff and in the Tombstone area.
A DOC toilet is located near the car park – just a short walk from the stile. Please use it rather than the bushes.
From Wānaka, take the Mt Aspiring Road for 20 mins/17km. After you leave the lake and crest a rise, a green flat surrounded by crags comes into view – Hospital Flat. Park at the second turn-out on the left, 1km past the West Wānaka Road turnoff.
Hospital Flat is a mix of conservation land and private land. Please don’t stray off the described access routes on private land, most of which is on the grassy flat.
