Route 8C on topo, grade II, 1+
From Eade Memorial Hut, follow the terrace up valley for about 1km, then descend to Classen Lake. Follow the true right shoreline of the lake to the moraine. A trough between the moraine wall and the Classen Glacier makes the travel a bit easier.
In the past, some parties have accessed the lower glacier by following the stream behind the moraine wall on the north-east side of the lake, then along a moraine shelf, before descending to Classen Glacier. The upstream end of the lake has made its way further up valley since then, so that route may no longer be feasible.
See Classen Saddle for a description of access from the Murchison Glacier. Flying to the upper Tasman Glacier, then crossing Tasman Saddle to reach the Murchison Glacier and Classen Saddle, is probably the easiest way to access the Classen Glacier.
