The Maximilian Range rises from the Whymper Glacier as a high, wild wall of mostly poor rock and meets the Main Divide at Mt Elie de Beaumont. Most peaks on the Maximilian Range were first climbed from the Burton Glacier, which is sometimes approached from the Whataroa, either over Callery Saddle or directly up the stream near Whymper Hut.
