Drive to the end of Godley Peaks Road (begins 2 km west of Lake Tekapo) to the Cass River Bridge. 2WDs can make it this far. Permission is needed in advance to take a 4WD further up the valley. Contact Glenmore Station (03 680 6752). If you’re planning to park at the bridge and walk or mountain bike up the valley it’s still courteous to let the station know beforehand, since the route crosses private land.
Access to Cass and Ailsa valleys
It’s a pretty long way, but straightforward.
The Ailsa valley can also be reached from the Jollie River by a non-technical crossing of Jollie Saddle. Gravel flats at 1560m in Ailsa Stream reportedly provide nice camping.
If travelling between Ailsa and upper Cass via their junction, don’t be tempted to cross the lower part of Mt Lucia’s south-east ridge. It’s quicker to follow the rivers.
Shelter
All huts in this area are either derelict or private. Take a tent and cross your fingers for good weather.
