The western slopes were descended by Ed Cotter and Earle Riddiford in January 1951.
From the west: Route 9.26 on topo, grade III, 3. Access to the col from the west is on steep snow, which becomes badly crevassed in late summer. To reach the Tasman Glacier, large crevasses in the lower Anna Glacier after midsummer usually necessitate a traverse over Walter‘s north-east ridge. Start on the right side of the ridge and follow your nose.
From the east: Head up the Anna Glacier (route 5.43), usually keeping close under Walter to avoid crevasses. Alternately, traverse Mt Walter using the south-west ridge (route 5.37) and north-east ridge (route 5.42). The north-east ridge becomes truncated as it drops down to the Elie-Walter col – it broadens out to form a vague triangular face. The route stays near the true left side of this face, near the edge of the Spencer Face of Walter. A combination of abseiling and downclimbing will get you down without too much hassle.
