Awatea is a characteristic McKerrow Glacier peak, prominent dip slope on the west side and steep scarp on the east. From Douglas Pass, start up the easy ridge then cut out onto the snowfield north of the ridge from 1900m to 2240m. Above here, negotiate three rock steps to reach the summit. The account of the first ascent describes some exposed scrambling and a couple of short sections of trickier rock. Unlikely to have been repeated.
