This saddle provides a steep tramping route (grade II, 2+) between Architect Creek and the Cook valley.
Harry the Whale, German Harry and Tony the Greek crossed the saddle in the 1880s.
From the upper Architect Creek basin, ascend the scree gully beginning at BX15 545 702 to about 1440m, and then sidle west to gain the spur on the true right. Ascend the spur to reach the range east of Whales Saddle.
To reach the Cook River, traverse along the range to the top of a prominent gully at BX15 543 708 (about 250m west of Whales Saddle). Descend the gully, taking care on the first 200m, which involves steep tussock and snowgrass.
At about 1140m, join the major open gravel creek bed draining Pt 1948m, which is followed to Balfour Corner in the Cook River.
