The first of many routes at the Bay referencing the fate of the pilot of Flight TE901 and his tragic entanglement with Mt Erebus. Presumably when legitimate rock star John Allen soloed the first ascent of this route there was little chance of him hitting the ground with the same impact.
As far as I know, this route name does not reference the pilot of the plane that crashed into Mt Erebus in Nov. 1979. Rather, it refers to Jim Collins, a top Colorado climber of the late 1970s - the man who made white tube socks with coloured stripes fashionable for a few years round the turn of that decade...
