The Wanaka region covers a wide area but is historically centred around Hospital Flat and development has fanned out along the roads and gradually explored further afield areas from Hells Gate, Wishbone Falls and Twilight Wall in the Matukituki Valley to the summit rocks of Treble Cone. The rock is schist and routes often require a lot of cleaning. Most routes are sport routes with bolted protection and fixed lower offs. There are over 700 routes in the area. The Wanaka Rock Climbing Club guidebook, published by NZAC, is Wanaka Rock.
