Southern Approaches

There are a number of routes possible from Junction Flat (for access, see Corner Pk East Ridge description). 1. Deer Spur Creek. At the forks north of Junction Hut, climb the middle spur to reach the West Ridge of Dingle Pk above 1500m and scramble the ridge to the summit. 2. Moonlight and Roses Route. Climb steeply behind Junction Hut and follow the ridge over Pt1073. A long sidle at around 1100m gives access to Moonlight and Roses Hut but the terrain and scrub become messy east of Pt1414. If heading directly for the peak, stay on the ridge to the saddle beyond Pt1414. (A variation on this may be easier than the contour route to reach the hut.) Sidle into the east branch of Deer Spur Creek and at 1450m climb directly to reach the ridge 100m east of the summit. 3. Another route to reach M and R Hut is to continue up Timaru River for 1.5km past Junction Flat to the first stream coming in from the north. Criss-cross up this side stream to the forks just below the hut. Climb the spur through open bush to above bushline before sidling to the hut. From the hut, it is 300m of tussock to reach the saddle north of Pt1414 where the second option described above is joined.
