Head up the Timaru River route from the car park at the bridge. The water is always discoloured with silt and if levels are above normal, crossings will be dangerous. The numerous crossings increase in difficulty until well upriver. The High River Track may be a much better option. From Junction Hut, trace Deer Spur Creek to the forks and take the western branch for a couple of hundred metres until it is easier to climb out onto a tussock terrace to the west. Route find through scrubby guts near the beech edge and continue north aiming to meet the East Ridge above the saddle. A steep gut gives access to the South Ridge 50m below the summit.
