A prominent snow debris-filled gully (‘the escalator’) leads up towards Elcho Pass from BY14 442 354. The approach near the pass can be corniced and later in summer is on steep, loose rock. An alternative is to diagonal up grass slopes upstream towards about BY14 442 366 and then follow scree and snow back to the pass.

The approaches to the pass are easy on the western side. From downstream of
Kea Flat on the Landsborough River follow Kea Stream taking the northern
branch at the fork near bush-edge and enjoy the wander over rock and scree to
the pass
