The saddle at the head of Freds Stream provides an alternative to Jamieson Saddle for direct access from the lower Tasman Valley to Reardon Hut in the Dobson Valley. From the head of Freds Stream follow a tussock lead at BY15 630 434 (marked as scrub on some topo maps) to the spur running south-west from Pt 1502m. Follow the spur to the 1800m contour, then sidle north-west to the saddle. Descend on the western side, then sidle out on the true right of the gorged stream at about 1350m to a small gully on the scrubline at BY15 593 454. Follow open leads down through the scrub, before traversing out to the right at about 1000m to the marked stream to the north which provides open travel to the valley floor. First crossing unknown.
