Malcolm Col is not used as a crossing.
The col can be accessed easily from the upper Frances Glacier, but there is a major crevasse across the Frances itself at 2000m that can be difficult to cross especially later in the season. Other slots exist at about the 2200m contour, but these are usually negotiable. On the western (northern) side, significant rock bluffs need to be descended to the Malcolm Glacier, and although at least one party has done this it is not recommended.
First crossed by GH Thompson, J Fabian, and M Banks, 28th Dec 1957.
