Named after Samuel Butler, as this is the saddle from which Butler first saw Whitcombe Pass and
rather optimistically resolved to check out the quality of sheep grazing on its far side.
Butler Saddle
provides good access to the lower Reischek and Rakaia Valleys. The approach from the Lawrence is
straightforward. To reach the Rakaia River from the saddle, sidle north-west to reach the spur leading
down to Meins Knob. At Meins Knob pick up the cut track that leads both up and down valley.
