Hunter River

The Hunter River, at the head of Lake Hāwea, is a long valley but the very pretty upper reaches can be gained relatively rapidly via passes from the Wills River to the west or the Huxley to the east.

The public road ends just shy of Terrace Creek. From here permission is required from Hunter Valley Station Ltd. Email hvfarmingco@gmail.com or hvftourism@gmail.com or phone 03 443 1242.
There is no access 1 October to 1 December (during lambing) and no 4WD access in winter (1 May to 30 November). Outside those times, with station approval, 4WD vehicles can be taken as far as Ferguson Hut.
