The first east-to-west crossing was by Bill Beavan, Ed Cotter, Ed Hillary, George Lowe and Earle Riddiford in December 1950, en route from the Tasman Glacier to the Burton Glacier via Callery Saddle for the first ascent of the Maximilian Ridge of Elie de Beaumont.

Approach
From Murchison névé: Navigate the crevasses to the saddle. The descent to the Whymper is a long way on snow and scree but is relatively straightforward. A rock step seems to be developing at the beginning of this descent that may require an abseil (grade II, 2+).
