Approach

From Franz Josef township it is possible to climb from the Tatare Tunnels track through bush onto Mt Mueller, and then along the very scrubby and slow ridge to Mt Burster. The summit of Mt Buster can be bypassed on the north.
Beyond Mt Burster, travel along the ridge to Tatare Saddle is mostly pleasant, with a couple of brief and unpleasant exposed sections of crumbling rock near Mt Spencer. There is an okay crossing of the Callery River about 400m upstream of Spencer Junction.
Allow two days to reach Tatare Saddle.
