Ngā Poutiriao ō Mauao, the Mauao Joint Administration Board, has decided not to allow climbing on Mauao (Mt Maunganui). The bolts were removed in 2021.

On the far side of the island, hidden in the bush near the shore is the following route. The steep sport route with the chain link hangers.
