First crossed as far as lower Bettison Creek by farmer Jim Dennistoun and 1905 All Black Eric Harper
in 1908.
The route follows Eric Stream to the pass, negotiating one small bluff on the true right.
From Bettison Stream the easiest access leads up a small gravel gully at I35 165522 through greasy bluffs to easier slopes above. Climb out of the gravel gully at about 1600m on the northern side and continue up easy slopes to the Main Divide. Head along the Divide to the pass. From the pass, descend (usually snow) slopes to the south then east, curving into the head of Eric Stream
