Mikonui Valley to Galena Ridge via Healey Creek Hut
Head up the Mikonui Valley to a spur at J34 380958 / BV18 280 342 and pick up the marked route. This is only intermittently maintained and may be overgrown in places. Above Healey Creek Hut climb the spur to about the 1500-metre contour then sidle onto tussock benches just below on the Healey Creek side. Climb along these under the ridge to a saddle south-east of Pt 1643 metres. The route ascends to a big cairn near the junction with Galena Ridge.
Top Tuke Hut to Galena Ridge
From Top Tuke Hut head up the river to the spur at J34 385882 / BV18 285 266. A short section of track leading from the river through scrub to poles on the tussock spur has been cut by DOC. Follow the spur up to Beaumont West.
Galena Ridge traverse from Mt Beaumont to Mt Bowen
The ridge from Mt Beaumont to Remarkable Peak is easily traversed. East of Remarkable Peak, however, bluffs on the ridge intervene. To bypass them, descend from the plateau south-west of Remarkable Peak and sidle east for some distance, navigating around numerous bluffs under the south face of Remarkable Peak. Continue along the ridge past Dickson Pass and eventually ascend steep loose rock to Sentinel Peak before continuing to Mt Bowen.
