Kelly Range

Type
Part of

Ski Touring.
The Kelly Range was the scene of another early ski area that has now passed into history. Westerlies and south-westerlies may bring good snow dumps in winter. The track starts 3km north of Otira and climbs 700m, up to Carroll Hut (DoC hut, 1120m elevation) in 2 to 3 hours walking. An ice axe and possibly crampons may be required for the final steep and slippery section of the track.
From the hut a slope goes up to Kelly’s Hill (1408m), and there is also access onto the rolling tops of the Kelly Range to the south. Note that the weather comes in rapidly and navigation skills are required on this rolling terrain to return to the hut or your tent at the end of the day.
