Approach

The best access to Gorilla Stream (and the east bank of the Tasman River) is to get a boat across Tasman Lake. Contact Glacier Explorers for details. Boat rides are only possible when normal trips are running, usually during summer if the weather is okay.
Very occasionally, when the Tasman River is very low (usually only in winter) it is possible to cross on foot where the river splits into multiple braids, but this is a serious proposition as the river is swift, discoloured and very cold.
A fast flat walk leads from the lake down the true left of the Tasman River. There is a short section of scrub in Gorilla Stream – use vague trails on the true right and then boulder hop up into the upper valley. Some gravel flats at 1450m provide good camping.
Time: From Tasman Lake to upper Gorilla Stream, 6 hrs
