Between West Ridge and the top of the Okahu Gorge is a large triangular crag: Escudo Buttress, bounded on its left (looking up) by the obvious rib followed by Headbanger (ice route).

With increasing erosion, a ledge system along the lower reaches of the buttress provides a convenient summer access route from the west ridge to the southern crater rim.

This line provides convenient summer access through the bluffs from the west ridge up onto the southern crater rim. From the base of the 'west ridge direct' line, follow a narrowing ledge system around to the left. When the ledge system runs out, ascend the bluff direct over blocky broken ground keeping just right of a loose gully.
