Beyond the Motatapu River crags lies the Matukituki valley. There is plenty on offer, in particular excellent multi-pitch sport climbing routes. Where the river forks into its West and East Branches, the huge cliff of Hells Gate overlooks the entrance to the West Branch. Opposite, Pearly Gates offers excellent winter cragging. A little further up the valley, Fat Freddies and Wishbone Falls feature technical climbing on great rock. In days gone by, Phoebe Creek was Wānaka’s primary rock climbing attraction but his is now out of bounds for the foreseeable future.
Take Mt Aspiring Rd up into the Matukituki valley. The seal ends at the Treble Cone ski field turn-off, about 3km beyond the Motatapu River bridge. It is approximately 22km further (50km from Wānaka) to the end of the road at Raspberry Flat carpark. The cliffs are spread throughout the valley. Refer to each crag for specific access details.
