The Yang to the south’s Yin. As the seasons flow, and the vitamin D supplement of the south veers towards overdose, climbers natually gravitate to the cooler options across the road. Some walls do get morning sun but many don’t get any at all and are a shady haven away from the Christmas turkey oven of summer.

Access
From Wānaka, take the Mt Aspiring Road for 20 mins/17km. After you leave the lake and crest a rise, a green flat surrounded by crags comes into view – Hospital Flat. Park at the second turn-out on the left, 1km past the West Wānaka Road turnoff. The walls are across the road.
